Spot on - as you invariably are! I didn’t bother listening to his speech. Thank you for going through the pain and futility of doing that and confirming the wisdom of my decision to give it a miss!

Very kind of you, Michael. But I have to ask: if you didn't hear the speech, how can you be sure that my take was "spot on"?

Entirely fair comment and question. I did check in with Isabel Hardman’s take on the speech and have borne the pain of watching and listening to Starmer over the past two years so had no doubt that you were misrepresenting what you had heard. Spot on then in the sense of reflecting the measure of the man that we have all got to know and picking up on typical Starmerisms as focusing on issues that are not central to his survival or raison d’etre - BS nationalisation, closer ties with (but not rejoining) the EU, rehashing his supposed achievements in NHS waiting lists -achieved by playing around with them, it seems - not taking part in a war that we were never going to be required to join, blah, blah, urgency and no status quo (beyond him staying in No. 10), fairer society (but not at the expense of Benefits Street), my father was a tool maker ….. I could go on.

Simon, I suspect one of the problems is that most people have stopped listening. What I see is someone who is simply not good at their job. It happens. And the more he tries to do the leadership thing the more his limitations are exposed.

Based on comments made to me privately (and the earlier comment on this page), I am starting to wonder whether I was the only person who actually listened to the end of Starmenr's speech. I guess that makes me the mug.
