I actually think the root of the problem here lies in Panorama and what it does. For many years, I have noted that whenever Panorama covers a subject of which I have some personal understanding, their reporting is shoddy, inaccurate and biased to the conclusion which they want the programme to deliver. When I hear about a Panorama exclusive, I think “oh no, the BBC again causing trouble”. I think the whole structure of Panorama is unsuited to a public service broadcaster. It belongs to the Daily Mail or Guardian elements of campaigning journalism. Start with a bias, make your investigation lean in that direction and then publish enough to make people think you have unmasked some great evil. It would have been good for the select committee to have challenged them on the whole nature of that programming.

On the other hand, matters such as Question Time and the like are where I see efforts at impartiality paying off (although some would argue that too much airtime is given to new political forces with high opinion poll numbers but few delegates) .

The charter renewal is clearly going to be a major event this time. I have the view that the BBC needs massively pruning and we as a society have to decide what is in and what is out. I would take out sport, for instance. I think the free market is completely capable of delivering sports content. I hope you will be contributing your wisdom in that debate.

Agreed. Another very well and very fairly written commentary on the BBC’s serious failings here. But for the leak of the Editorial Advisory guy’s unheeded report the BBC would have doggedly and deviously stuck to their line of “nothing to see here” that needs any public owning up to.

Personally, I really do strongly object to having to pay the TV licence - and not just for one address (you can cry for me if you wish!) purely, in my case, to listen to Radio 3 on Saturday morning and occasionally Record Review on Saturday afternoon and maybe the occasional opera in the evening. So much more expensive than my streaming subscriptions that I can carry with me anywhere (and which I choose because of their focus on what I wish to listen to or watch)!

And don’t get me started on the BBC’s Hamas propaganda!
